If you didn’t get enough of Tessa Thompson in Creed II (2018) last week, you’re in luck as she’s co-starring again in Boots Riley‘s Sorry to Bother You (2018). Following telemarket Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield), this comedy film is underscored by Riley himself with his hip hop band The CoupRiley explained to Billboard that “the soundtrack is only happening when the characters (played by Lakeith Stanfield and Tessa Thompson) can hear it,” which hints at a more diegetic score. The soundtrack is available to stream and download now.

Also next Friday, Robert Redford hits big screens in David Lowery‘s The Old Man & The Gun (2018). This comedy-drama based on the true story of Forrest Tucker’s escape from San Quentin is underscored by Daniel Hart who has scored for Lowery before in the 2017 drama A Ghost Story. The soundtrack is available to stream and download now.

There seems to be a theme of true events this week as Matthew McConaughey makes a return in Yann Demange‘s White Boy Rick (2018). This film follows the story of Richard Wershe Jr. who was an undercover informant for the FBI in the 1980s. The crime-drama is scored by the brilliant Max Richter who we featured in the Soundtrack Rundown two weeks ago for his work in My Brilliant Freind. He’s been busy! The soundtrack is available to stream and download now.

TV

5 December 2018

On TV this week, The Marvelous Mrs Marvel returns for its second season on Amazon Prime. Eric Gorfain and Sam Phillips also make a return to underscore the series. It’s great to see this feminist series follow suit behind the camera by employing a great female composer such as Phillips to co-create the musical accompaniment. Sadly the soundtrack is not yet available to buy or stream.

Many will be pleased that this Thursday, snowy Fortitude is back for its third and final series on Sky Atlantic. Australian composer Ben Frost will be scoring the dramatic finale, doing what he does best. The only soundtrack currently available was released last year.

7 December 2018

And last but not least, season 3 (part 6) of Netflix’s The Ranch will finally be available on Friday. Starring Ashton Kutcher and Debra Winger, this American comedy has become a TV staple for many. Ryeland Allison, who is probably best known for working the music departments of such films as Madagascar (2005) and The Holiday (2006), will be underscoring the series as before. His soundtrack is not currently available to buy or stream.
